March is Disability Awareness Month

“A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” –Christopher Reeve

This quote means so much to me considering it is National Disabilities Awareness Month. Both of my children have disabilities and I have taught them that having a disability does not stop from living a normal ordinary life. A disability just stops them from doing certain things.

The definition of disability is a physical or mental handicap, especially one that prevents a person from living a full, normal life or from holding a gainful job.

My daughter has Cerebral Palsy and is in a wheelchair. She tells people her chair is her legs. Being in a wheelchair prevents her from doing things such as running, walking, jumping but there is so much she can do. She can play video games, look at a book, and play with her most favorite toys. Being in a wheelchair is just an obstacle.

My son has Asperger’s Disorder and he struggles socially. He can talk and interact with others. He just struggles with initiating and maintaining conversation with his peers. This is just an obstacle. He is so talented at drawing and doing strategic games. He has learned that his social awkwardness is just an obstacle and with practice he can overcome it.

National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is observed in March each year. During March, all individuals, agencies, and organizations concerned with the challenges of developmental disabilities are encouraged to observe this month with appropriate observances and activities directed toward increasing public awareness of the needs and the potential of Americans with developmental disabilities.

The human spirit is one of ability, perseverance and courage that no disability can steal away.
