Friendship

“Find a group of people who challenge and inspire you; spend a lot of time with them, and it will change your life.” — Amy Poehler

“Friendship is a relationship of mutual affection between people.”

Friendship is so important on the special needs journey. Without friendships so many people end up feeling isolated and alone. Feeling isolated and alone leads to very negative thoughts and self blame. Your child’s diagnoses and prognosis is not your fault. I remember blaming myself for my daughter’s Cerebral Palsy and my son’s Autism. That was the furthest thing from the truth. When I experienced the self blame…I was feeling isolated and alone. These thoughts were not helping me. They were only hurting me. If I only had someone to talk to about these feelings, I feel I could have responded differently and in a more positive way. When you have a valuable friendship, that can completely change your whole outlook and perspective. Friends help us navigate through the tough times and celebrate with us through the good times. I do not know how I would have gotten through the tough times without friends. They are there when we need them. Sometimes friendships end and that enables a person to create new friendships. No one likes for a friendship to end but that is just part of life. Life is hectic and change must occur for us to grow as a person. Growth is what helps us the most in our life.
