As special needs parents we don’t have the power to make life “fair,” but we do have the power to make life joyful.

I am sure you are asking yourself…what is special needs parenting?

Special needs children are those children that have more needs than typical children. These needs must be addressed for the child to thrive. Hence the term special needs parenting evolved. Some of these needs include feeding disorders, seizure disorders, mobility issues, behavioral disorders, special educational needs, and many more.

A lot of children with special needs require equipment such as wheelchairs, standers, walkers, feeding tubes, feeding equipment, seizure alarms, weighted blankets, special cups, plates, and utensils.

Due to all the special equipment and health conditions, parenting a child with special needs can be exhausting, stressful, and most of all rewarding. I am sure you are asking yourself,” If it is exhausting and stressful, how can it be rewarding?” It is exhausting because of the sleepless nights, endless doctor’s appointments, medications at all hours, and endless worry and stress. It is stressful because you never know what is going to happen. Sometimes just going to the doctor can end up with multiple tests, medications, specialist visits, and follow up visits. It is rewarding because you get to spend all your time with your child. You are there for everything. You are their advocate, their biggest supporter, and their best friend. You get to watch them grow up, you get to be at every doctor’s appointment, you get to help them through any obstacle, and most of all, you are there during every achievement.

Special needs parenting is not easy but it is rewarding. And I will be here to help you on your journey. Until next time…

I completely agree with it being so rewarding. When my little man was a baby, I was told he would probably never walk or talk. Needless to say, he proved them wrong, and this is everything to me. Well, accept when he drops the Fbomb… I have to remind myself, at least he can xx
